Designing an IMDB-like platform for UK Theatres with show listings, bookings, cast, theatres, reviews and additional social features.

The Challenge

Some restrictions are both good and bad.

The app was already created with a barebones design that posed a design challenge to improve the usability while not making any drastic changes to the functionality.

This did, help in gathering early feedback and as design was being created, we were having them integrated and kept getting fresh feedback from the early beta users that allowed us to iterate fast.

There were two primary use cases for Dress Circle:

Curating lists & social interactions

Discovering shows

Designed different ways to help people find their next show to watch, from curated lists to actors and theatres, with audience interest-based ratings and discussions.

Home page where the ranking list has been given the main priority after a brief introduction section

The Show page with complete information about the page, ranging from ratings, media, actions and booking

Actor’s page with links to shows they have appeared in, other actors and engagement options

Finding shows by theatres. Unlike movies, theatre shows are more specific to where they’re being played

Show cards modified for smaller screens

Reorganized the layout to keep the most important information above the fold

Keeping theatre info leading to address above the fold specially for users coming from show pages

Curating lists & social interactions

Designed different pathways to help people find their next show to watch, from curated lists to actors and theatres, with audience interest-based ratings and discussions

Home page for logged in users with feed and widgets for important notifications, calendar and friends

Profile of individual members with their ranked lists including their likes and dislikes about each show

Form to add a show, separated from optional additional fields to make it easy to add shows. Also includes show posters and icons to make the form feel closer to the resulting entry

Dedicated page for Sign-up/Log-in forms when user lands through a direct URL

Home page for logged in users focused only on the feed for smaller screens

Profile of individual members. Created additional tabs to show items on the sidebar

View of friends list from profile pages. On larger screens they're on the same page in the sidebar
